When an artist sets out to create a painting they are striving to convey many things. They want to tell a story through the picture. While all artists strive to create this, only a few are able to create masterpieces: pieces that we all know and remember. That is what we should be striving for when we are coding sepsis, we want to create a masterpiece so that the payer can look at a claim and see the patient’s story. In this session we will be talking about the tools of the trade for sepsis – What is it? How is it different from SIRS, severe sepsis, septic shock and septicemia? As you will see, diagnosing sepsis is a multifaceted clinical process and it takes a keen eye to recognize this disease from both the clinical and the coding perspective.  Creating a masterpiece when reporting sepsis; Being prepared – setting up the easel and canvas and having our brushes and paints ready; In this session we will be looking how to create our own masterpieces when documenting and reporting sepsis; we will look at: • Best Practices for Sepsis Documentation • ICD-10 CM codes for reporting sepsis

Attend this session to learn:

  • Utilize learned information to make logical decisions regarding coding and querying for sepsis;
